A Short Transit in Copenhagen

This morning I woke up at 04:30 so I could head over to the train station. With my suitcase handle broken, I had to carry it the entire way to the station, which ended up being more difficult than I anticipated due to the weight. I was very surprised this morning when I discovered the streets still full of people, out and about! Close to the station was a club where it appeared that many people were heading to, but it seemed a strange time to go to a club. The train station was very crowded with people waiting for the train (most of them pilgrims).

The train to Madrid departed at 05:45 and I was luckily able to get my bags stored before the train was full. My assigned seat was on the aisle and seated at a large table. I settled in to watch some shows on my phone, but soon fell asleep for much of the journey. The train arrived in Madrid shortly before 09:00, giving me plenty of time before having to head to the airport. I went to the main station terminal to get something to eat (and to help pass the time).

Shortly before noon I took another train out to the airport so I could fly to Copenhagen later this afternoon. Happily the airline had check-in running early and I was able to drop my bag right away. Once through security, I grabbed another small bite to eat and watched some more NetFlix on my phone while I waited to board the flight.

At 15:45 the flight departed from Madrid and I fell asleep almost immediately. I woke up shortly before we landed in Copenhagen at 18:45, slightly ahead of schedule. Baggage claim in Copenhagen took ages for my flight’s bags to arrive – they reached the belt nearly two hours after we landed! The airport was busy, but taking two hours was ridiculous. I then took the train into the city center of Copenhagen, where I made the short walk over to my hostel for the next two nights.

The hostel was very nice and my room consisted of six beds, along with a separate bathroom and shower. The common areas were very inviting, with tons of seating and places to hang out. After getting my bags stored, I took a much-needed shower after the long day of traveling and then hung around the hostel for the rest of the evening. My naps during the day made it somewhat difficult for me to fall asleep this evening, but I eventually drifted off around midnight.

The next morning I slept in for the first time since starting the Camino. I was delighted to not have an early start to the day, and to not have anything planned for the day ahead. I walked over to a Starbucks and brought my broken laptop, with the faint hope that it would miraculously start working (as it had done a few months ago). To my total surprise, the computer did in fact work this morning, which meant that I could get caught up on my work. I hadn’t been able to work for the last three days of the previous week, so I had quite a bit to do today. I spent almost the entire day working at Starbucks.

In the evening I grabbed a quick bite to eat before returning to the hostel. I then grabbed my Kindle and found a comfortable chair in the common area where I read for a little while. I had done almost no reading during the Camino, so I was very happy to have some down time to enjoy my book before heading to bed. It wasn’t the most exciting of days, but still enjoyable and productive.
